July 5th 1863

Bloody Battle Won By the Union by Lizzie Floeck
On June first a battle between the Union and the Confederates took place for 3 days. On the first day of the battle the Union and the confederates have  “clash over shoes”. The armies were in the town of Gettysburg when intense fighting takes place as reinforcements arrive. At the end of the day the Unions held the high ground.

On June second the North had an advantage because they were on the high ground. Fighting doesn't end till ten pm and the battle has already had a total of 37,000 casualties.

On June third Lee decides to attack the Union center with divisions lead by General Picket. Lees troops were badly beaten and were forced to retreat across the Potomac River. Gettysburg is a Union Victory and is a turning point in the war.

On July fourth the Confederacy is divided into two and the Union now controls the Mississippi River. Ulyses S Grant is now a northern hero.

The battle of Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War but it was a major turning point and was very important.
